After the Philippines submitted what it called an official chart covering Huangyan Dao and its surrounding waters to the UN, the PLA Southern Theater Command conducted joint naval and air exercises around the island, while the China Coast Guard carried out law-enforcement drills nearby. Beijing says these exercises are a serious warning in response to what it calls Philippine provocations and violations of China’s sovereignty.
