China’s Defense Ministry says Huangyan Dao is an inherent part of China’s territory and that Beijing has continuously exercised sovereignty and jurisdiction over the area. After the Philippines submitted what it called an official chart covering Huangyan Dao and its surrounding waters to the UN, the PLA Southern Theater Command conducted joint naval and air exercises around the island, while the China Coast Guard carried out law-enforcement drills nearby. Beijing says these exercises are a serious warning in response to what it calls Philippine provocations and violations of China’s sovereignty. The message is blunt: China will not accept what it sees as provocations in the South China Sea, and the PLA says it will respond firmly to any attempt to create trouble.
