Can an engineer explain to me why a diesel generator powering an electric motor is more efficient than just having a diesel motor powering the drivetrain?

yes: a diesel generator operating in the powerband to power electric motors is 1) more efficient 2) more torque 3) more precise than using a diesel motor directly
