It’s more contagious than HIV. The other problem with hepatitis B is that in adults, at least half of the people in this country who have it don’t know they’re infected, so they’re unknowingly leaving hepatitis B germs in places that can put other people at risk. And that includes infants. I’ve seen this personally. There was a child in my practice who got hepatitis B in the first several weeks of life, and everyone tried to figure out where the child had gotten it. It turned out it was a grandparent who didn’t know they had hepatitis B and was helping care for the baby. Hepatitis B is out there; you can’t see it.
