The real question is - when he was speaking... who was able to understand him? Or did they have the speech printed out for everyone. Its not like they had live subtitles back then. Seems like Hunanese tends to drop final consonants. I hear shen yi" rather than "sheng yi" 生意。

I think that for a native speaker it wouldn't take too long to adjust. After all, it's an accent. He's not speaking in literal hunanese which would be unintelligible. He's speaking standard mandarin but with hunanese pronunciation.
