Corn: Trump wants to rule like Putin, and he wants to do deals with Putin. The war in Ukraine is just a nuisance for him that gets in the way. He doesn’t care about protecting Ukrainian democracy or the Ukrainian population. He wants this war over with so he and Putin can stride the world together with their own collective spheres of influence and make even more money than he has already made in office. His sort of courting of Putin has been going on for over a dozen years now—and we even see in the news as we speak: Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding—the story that ProPublica put out a few days ago, a Russian oligarch not just attending this very small, intimate gathering, but paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to foot the bill for this lavish affair held on a private island in the Bahamas. And he’s not just an oligarch. He’s not just one of these business guys who has to be nice to Putin to keep his money. He was a guy convicted of extortion and assault who led a biker gang called the Night Wolves that worked with Russian militias in Ukraine and elsewhere and became part of the security apparatus that was very close around Putin, and because of that Putin made him rich and made him head of a corrupt boxing organization, and he got a lot of money out of that. So he’s really tied into the Putin intelligence security apparatus, and he is showing up at Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding, and he says, “Oh, he’s been a good friend for a few years.” A few years? I mean, I don’t know anybody who’s been a friend for a few years who would give me $100 for my wedding. So it doesn’t pass the smell test. While Trump has been cozying up to Putin, Putin has been trying to get even deeper into the Trump family clan.

Putin has no respect for Trump. Yet Trump keeps siding with him. It’s like the kid who’s picked on in school trying to kiss up to the bully who keeps taking his lunch money.

What Putin wants is the impression of a divided West — he wants a divided West. And the more we seem to accept the idea that America is no longer committed to European security, or that America is no longer committed to the protection and support of Ukraine, the better for Putin and the worse for Ukraine. Don’t fall for it.
