Instrumentation is pretty close. Problem is, those weren't 80s chord progressions. It still would have been radically different than hits at that time.

I think with the different decades they change their voice & tone in a certain way. Everyone seems to mimic each other's singing voice style. For example no one is trying to sing like Mariah or Celine Dion anymore. The voice is still Britney Spears from the late 1990s.
