The honey water of agave plants

This isn't something at a great height. There's a famous type of hallucinogenic honey, Mad-honey or Pagal Mah, as it is known in the local language; found in Nepal. Mad honey is a type of honey that is harvested from the towering cliffs of Ghale Gaun. Honey collectors climb up more than 800 feet above the ground, with the help of what looks like flimsy ropes and nothing more. Most probably, they are the only ones who can pull this off unscathed. This particular honey is known for its unique properties and effects due to the presence of certain substances in the nectar of specific rhododendron flowers that the honeybees feed on. The nectar of the rhododendron flowers in the region contains grayanotoxins, which are a group of natural neurotoxins. When bees collect the nectar from these flowers and convert it into honey, these toxins are retained in the honey. Consuming mad honey in small quantities may have mild psychoactive effects, resulting in feelings of relaxation and euphoria. However, when taken in larger amounts, it can cause more severe symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, vomiting, hallucinations, and in extreme cases, it can lead to heart problems and even death.

Harvesting honey is a process that requires careful attention to detail and timing. It is best done when the bees have capped the majority of honey cells in the hive, indicating that the honey has reached the ideal moisture level of around 18-20%. Before harvesting, it is crucial to inspect the hive to ensure the overall health and readiness of the colony. The process involves several steps: 1. **Preparation**: Gather the necessary equipment, such as a bee brush, honey extractor, uncapping knife, and protective gear. 2. **Smoke the bees**: Gently puff smoke into the hive entrance and under the cover to encourage the bees to move away from the frames you will be harvesting. 3. **Remove the frames**: Carefully remove the frames filled with capped honey from the hive. 4. **Uncap the frames**: Use an uncapping knife or fork to remove the wax caps from the honey cells. 5. **Extract the honey**: Place the uncapped frames in a honey extractor, which uses centrifugal force to separate the liquid honey from the comb. 6. **Filter the honey**: Strain the extracted honey through a fine mesh or cheesecloth to remove any debris or wax particles. 7. **Bottle the honey**: Pour the filtered honey into clean, sanitized jars or containers. It is important to leave enough honey in the hive for the bees to survive the winter. Additionally, responsible honey harvesting practices promote the well-being and sustainability of the hive and the overall health of the bee colony.
