Gandhi was deeply inclined towards Sanatan Dharma, which is why no one had an issue calling him Mahatma. But he also wanted to reform Sanatan... He even discussed this with Periyar and invited him to join the effort. Periyar warned him: “They won’t spare you if you try.” As seen in this interview Ambedkar openly criticised his stand on Sanatan. Eventually, Gandhi realized Ambedkar & Periyar were right. He began openly criticizing many Sanatani rituals and practices. But as Periyar warned him, he was assassinated.
