"People passing away from non-communicable diseases is 84%. This is a big number. Among these people passing away from NCDs, cancer is the second leading cause. Since cancer is a treatable illness through early detection and treatment, the huge number of people [in the Maldives] passing away from this illness is a huge concern to us,“ says Juwairiya Saeed, Chairperson of the Cancer Society of Maldives (CSM). In this interview, Juwey highlights the core goal of CSM and the work the NGO is doing in cancer prevention, early detection, and support for cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers. She also touches on tobacco-control policies, the importance of patient-centric treatment, and what it means.
