Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is not dangerous. Timing and formulation are critical components of benefit vs. harm. I’m glad to see the FDA warnings removed from HRT. Thanks Carol Massar and Tim Stenovec at Bloomberg for covering this important topic. We need to understand when and how #HRT could...

Why is a Neurologist speaking out about Hormone Replacement Therapy???? When @FannyElahi states emphatically that "hormone replacement therapy is not dangerous", is she ignoring the research regarding the evidence that Estrogen Replacement Therapy increases the risk of cancer of the uterus ( endometrial cancer)?

@carolmassar @timsteno @Bloomberg I think a generic sentence is dangerous. As a survivor of hormone receptor positive cancer, my specialists have repeatedly warned against me taking HRT despite severe menopause symptoms. The heightened risk of cancer returning for me outweighs any benefits of HRT.

My message to all women is to have the conversation about HRT with their providers. Many could safely benefit from HRT but have been afraid to consider based on the WHI study that led to FDA warnings. In that study HRT was started too late. Indeed, not everyone can be on HRT. That’s why we also need to understand how hormones benefit the brain and other organs in order to develop treatments that can bypass HRT for those who cannot safely be placed on HRT. We need so much more research on this. Our contributions to this important area of research will be focused on understanding how HRT could help brain health by maintaining vascular health.
