I just watched a video on this, their hooves come out are called Eponychium, to not hurt the mare during birth and it hardens with 24 hours or so. God left no stone unturned.

Had a surprise baby donkey born on our little farm (didn't know mom was pregnant when we bought her) and his feet were like this! I didn't know what it was, but yup, all gone in about 15 min. Amazing how nature thinks of everything
