Hospitals are shutting down because Canada isn’t using the doctors we already have. In Oliver, BC the emergency room has closed 35 times within a year. Families have shown up in emergencies to find the doors locked. Meanwhile, 13,000 internationally trained physicians currently living in Canada are not working... as doctors. Helena Konanz and I are working on Parliament’s Health Committee to expose this failure. These are qualified people, many of them Canadians who studied medicine abroad, who want to serve their communities. The system shuts them out, and places like Oliver, BC pay the price. We’re pushing solutions: A national Blue Seal Standard with a national licence so doctors can work across provinces, and fast-tracked credential recognition to get health-care workers treating patients instead of being stuck in limbo. The Liberals claim that record immigration levels are the only way to fix Canada's health care system. But that's simply not true. They've ignored thousands of qualified doctors who are already in Canada unable to get licensed. Dr. Bichay came to Canada years ago, passed her exams, and did everything right. Yet she's still not allowed to practice, not because she isn't qualified, but because bureaucracy blocks her. In a powerful and heartbreaking statement at the health committee, she asked: "Why are you bringing more from outside the country when we are still here?" I could not agree more. I’m deeply disturbed by the apathy shown by the N Chandrababu Naidu led government towards hundreds of Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) who are being denied their rightful permanent medical registration despite completing their mandatory internships under National Medical Commission guidelines. These are young, qualified doctors who returned to serve their state after pursuing medical education abroad. Worse, when these doctors peacefully protested on National Doctors’ Day demanding justice, the government responded with detentions, lathi charges, and intimidation. Is this how we treat our own medical professionals? Why is the Andhra Pradesh Medical Council still not issuing PRs despite NMC clarifications? Why are qualified doctors being left in limbo while the state battles a shortage of medical staff? This is not just negligence, it’s systemic suppression of aspiring healthcare workers who deserve dignity and a future. I demand the state govt to immediately release permanent registrations, stop this exploitation, and allow these doctors to begin their careers legally and proudly.

The NHS rota coordinator told them to come in anyway. This is what doctors are up against. Not just being underpaid and working long hours in understaffed wards; but in a system that shows no compassion, even in moments of personal crisis. We’re treated as if we’re disposable. Expected to keep going, no matter the cost to our health, our families, or our wellbeing. We’re striking because this isn’t normal. It isn’t safe. And it certainly isn’t fair. If we want to keep doctors in the NHS, we have to start treating them like human beings.

Tomorrow I’m going out on strike as a Resident Doctor in England. I don’t take that decision lightly. I became a doctor to look after patients, not to walk away from work. But right now, I’m watching A&Es overflow, ambulances queue outside hospitals, and patients treated in corridors even on non strike days; while doctors who want to work in A&E are competing 14 to 1 for training places, and around 5 to 1 in GP. 30,000 doctors applied for 10,000 training jobs this year; thousands of future Consultants and GPs turned away due to Government imposed caps on training jobs. Doctors are ready to step in. The system isn’t letting them. On top of that, after years of pay erosion, Wes Streeting has recommended a real tents pay cut for doctors for the next financial year. These factors in combination makes it harder for doctors to stay, to train, and to build a future in the NHS. Wes Streeting’s offer doesn’t change this. The headline 4,000 jobs he announced are a cannibalisation of existing locally employed doctor jobs, so the total number of doctors doesn’t increase at all as a result of his offer. There’s also nothing on pay, despite assurances we were on a ‘journey’ to pay restoration last year. The BMA offered to meet Wes Streeting as soon as the November strikes ended. He ignored the BMA for weeks. Instead, a last-minute rushed offer arrived from him with less than 24 hours to respond. The BMA put it to resident doctors. Nearly 30,000 of them said it wasn’t good enough. For me, this is about jobs and pay together. You can’t reduce waiting lists without training doctors, and you can’t keep doctors in the NHS while cutting their pay in real terms. Tomorrow, I’ll be standing shoulder to shoulder with Resident Doctors across England on the picket lines; not because we want to strike, but because we need a solution from Wes Streeting that’s actually credible. That still remains within the Government’s gift to deliver.

It’s no surprise doctors are leaving when staying in the NHS keeps getting harder, and morale is plummeting. This strike is happening because the system is locking doctors out and letting patients down. Today in a side room in parliament the government pushed ahead with policy to increase the number of, and role of, Physician Associates PAs are not doctors, nor GPs, and yet they are being phased in as doctor substitutes and GP substitutes - read that again This will create a two tier system of health service, those seen by qualified doctors and GPs, and those seen by PAs We desperately need more doctors and GPs, but instead of training and hiring them (Brexit has made it difficult to bring more in), this Conservative government is watering down the quality of service being offered by the NHS In 2010 the Conservatives inherited the NHS as one of the world's best health services. Since then they have underfunded the NHS, outsourced so we pay more for the same service, and now they're watering down the quality of staff. Shame on anyone who still votes for the Conservative party, because they are destroying our NHS

Doctors are leaving the NHS because they are undervalued. In 2024, more doctors applied to leave the UK than in the previous decade combined - the result of a system that is fundamentally broken. We now have the diabolical situation where 40,000 doctors are competing for just 10,000 training jobs. Without these posts, doctors cannot train to become consultants or GPs. The NHS is actively blocking its own future workforce. At the same time, our pay has been eroded. Even after the most recent deal delivered during a period of double digit inflation, doctors are still around 20% worse off in real terms than in 2008 despite working just as hard, in a system where patients are sicker and more complex than ever before. Many resident doctors carry over £100,000 of student debt and start work as a fully qualified doctor on £18.62 an hour. We are asking for £22.67 an hour for foundation year one doctors for example, phased over time, not even all at once. Despite this, Wes Streeting has recommended another real terms pay cut this April.
