Among the children he visited was Liam Ramos, a 5-year-old who was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents while returning to his Minneapolis-area home from school with his father. Ramos and his family entered the U.S. legally, Castro said. The case has drawn national attention, and Democrats are calling for the father and son to be released, as broader scrutiny has grown around the ICE facility in Dilley, where the pair is detained alongside other families. Detainees there say that the prison has inadequate medical care, food contaminated with worms and limited access to drinking water. “We saw the whole gamut, the whole spectrum of kids, a 9-year-old who was picked up in Austin who spent New Year's Eve getting processed into this jail,” Castro recalled. “One young girl who kept coming up to me, a little girl who was hugging my leg, asking us to help get her out of there.” “These kids are very traumatized … and the parents themselves traumatized, grappling with how to help their kids, and they can't,” he added. The Trump Administration doesn’t want people to know about the brutality that takes place at the Dilley trailer prison—the only place in America where we imprison young children who have done nothing wrong. The food and the water make them sick. Medical care is often delayed or denied outright. The education offered is inadequate. Families are separated from one another. My name is Chris Elston, and I’m here to speak for children being irreversibly harmed by health professionals practicing what is falsely referred to as gender-affirming care. It is not caring to stop the development of children with puberty blockers. These are repurposed chemical castration and cancer drugs. It is not caring to alter their development with opposite-sex hormones. Every systematic review of the scientific literature shows that children are being harmed, and that scientific rigour is non-existent. Activist organizations pushing ideology have hijacked the medical community, and what is being done is nothing more than a live, unregulated experiment on kids. It is one of the great deceptions of our time to teach children that they might have been born in the wrong bodies! Affirming care would be to tell them that they are beautiful just as they are. No drugs or scalpels needed! Instead, children are being sterilized, and are having healthy body parts cut off. Overwhelmingly, these kids are autistic, have other mental health comorbidities, and many have suffered trauma or abuse. Girls as young as 12 are having their breasts removed, and 16-year-old boys are being castrated. State encroachment on parental rights is worsening outcomes. Here in Geneva, a child was taken from her parents because they refuse to transition her. Children have the human right to grow up with their bodies intact. It is time the Member States of the United Nations use the resolutions, procedures, and other tools at their disposal to stop this child abuse!

Yesterday, we traveled to one of the main detention centers in Mariona, El Salvador, but unsurprisingly, access was denied. A prison guard confirmed that nobody has been allowed to enter any of the detention centers, not even family members. They also confirmed that detainees are not allowed to make sporadic phone calls to their family members. We also met with victims of human rights abuses, including several men who were detained for over a year under the exception regime, and who still have other family members inside the prisons. They were fishermen, peasants, ordinary and hardworking individuals who were taken by the police and thrown in prison without any proper hearings, access to their lawyers or their families, and who shared with us the torture and inhumane conditions they suffered and witnessed in the different detention centers they were held in. While we formally requested access to CECOT, where ten of our Venezuelan clients are detained, and to the Centro Industrial Penitenciario in Santa Ana, where Kilmar Abrego Garcia is detained, the Salvadorian authorities have not responded to our requests.
