Blood type identification is based on the presence or absence of specific antigens and antibodies in the blood. The most commonly used system for classification is the ABO blood group system, which categorizes blood into four main types: A, B, AB, and O. These types are determined by the presence of either A or B antigens on the surface of red blood cells, or the absence of both (type O). The Rh system further divides these groups into Rh-positive (+) or Rh-negative (-) depending on the presence of the Rh factor, a protein on the red blood cell surface. Blood typing is typically performed through a process called agglutination testing, where antibodies specific to the A, B, and Rh antigens are added to a blood sample. If agglutination (clumping) occurs, it indicates the presence of the corresponding antigen. This helps determine the exact blood type, which is crucial for safe blood transfusions, organ transplantation, and pregnancy management. Blood typing is routinely performed in clinical settings using blood samples, ensuring compatibility and preventing immune reactions.

There is no control in that card you have no way to rule out spontaneous agglutination showing as AB pos…. And we don’t use this system in the U.S we type by tube or gel cards and both ways have a control.
