how a dam change river topography

Impact of Dams: - Beyond just holding back water, dams are giant batteries — hydroelectric ones generate about 16% of the world’s electricity, turning rivers into power plants. - Some dams are basically flood bouncers: by storing excess rain during wet seasons, they keep cities from turning into giant swimming pools when storms hit. - The ancient Romans built dams 2,000 years ago just to throw epic public fountain parties — their waterworks supplied Rome with more fresh water per person than many cities have today. - Beaver dams (nature’s version) can create entire wetlands that act like sponges, cleaning water and giving moose, otters, and ducks a five-star habitat. - One dam in China (Three Gorges) is so massive it literally slowed Earth’s rotation by 0.06 microseconds by shifting billions of tons of water toward the poles.

Water always win. Be water my friend

On July 3, 2025, Ethiopia celebrated the completion of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), Africa’s largest hydroelectric project.

Literally, every stone in the river does it. 😉😎

Navier Stokes in action.

A dam causes sediment buildup upstream and increased erosion downstream, reshaping the river’s topography on both sides.

Rivers just cant catch a break huh

You worked pretty hard on that caption huh

plus it stops upstream migration altogether as well as natural deposition of materials. damns are overall pretty awful. Maybe better than fossil fuels but quite bad for local ecosystem

What happens when the water is stopped by the Dams and is released only when irrigation is required ?

Damn.

Waw!! Learning a new thing everyday

Nope

The Bonneville Dam on the Columbia shook with tremors one day. It set off the seismometers that keep track for safety. Mt. St. Helens is quite near. It was a Giant Sturgeon Ball. Hundreds of ancient giants having a tumble at the base of that enormous structure. They have viewing on the fish ladders for salmon if you visit.

Cool

Tragic

Nice to know, the facts😊

Oooh cool, I wonder if this is a way to move very heavy stones etc like in the phyrimd times 😉
