355/113 is quite close

Finally… a proof of π I can eat 😄🍕

Auccuracy: .27 isn't ~.14

Real World Physics's profile picture

Yes dear 😄📏 It’s definitely not exact accuracy — just a fun mechanical approximation of π.

This is not accurate: The 3 bigger chains have 11 nods each, Thus the smaller part should have 11 x 0.14 = 1.54 nodes but the chain shown have 3 nodes.

Good point 😄 It’s more of an approximation than an exact proof.

this is probably a pretty good fit since the chain is made to fit on that sprocket to begin with. so now pi is (3*11+3)/11=3.27272727272727... near enough then

Nice observation 😄📏 For a mechanical approximation, that’s actually a pretty clever and close result to π.

Accurate enough, but not 100%. Nobody, I say NOBODY has recorded PI 100% accurately. And that is the difference between knowledge and wisdom. Knowledge, knowing Pi is irrational. Wisdom, knowing 3.14 is accurate enough in a lot of places.

I appreciate the way you see it.

3/11 is .27 🤷‍♂️

Exactly 😄 So it’s just a rough approximation of π.

Small yellow part is not 0.14 of it. It is 0.2727 of it.

Если бы добавил к каждому длинному отрезку цепи по еще одному звену, то Пи было бы равно 3. Не благодарите.

Remember when Pi = 3? Those were good times.

He shows 2 x r = 1 => r = 1/2 Circumfence C = 2 x pi x r and r=1/2 follows C = 2 x pi x 1/2 = pi. So, pretty accurate 🙃

The chains has 5.5 of this cogs or whatever they are called and the last one has 1.5. 5.5:1.5=1:x, 5.5x=1.5, x= 1.5/5.5, x=0.27 which is not 0.14. So by your example pi is 3.27

Why is everyone counting the pins rather than the plates? That’s like counting starting from 0. The math is 10+10+10+2. 3.2 is a good approximation for pi (2% off). The pitch circle of the sprocket is slightly larger than what he measures with the lengths of chain.

Perimeter of circle= 2Pi*r

If the chain had a possible zero width and a length from the edge to the edge of the gear, it would be correct. At this width, the chain marks two different lengths of circuits.

Pi is the proportion between diameter and circumference of a circle, no mater its size. That easy.

Pi there is 3.2 exactly

This will get you a more accurate pi. It is required to put it into tables. There's also a really easy simplier one. 22/7 is inaccurate.

not very, but it's colourful and easy to understand and it very effectively explains what pi is so it's pretty cool, actually.

97% as 2.0 / 9.0 = 0.22 so ~ 3.22, divided by pi is 0.975
