Not Gandhi, not non violence, but it was the Naval Mutiny of 1946 that made the British pack up and leave India. Sanjeev Sanyal: "When the sailors mutinied and took control of 78 Indian Navy ships, the British ordered the Maratha Regiment to fire at them, but they saw that the Maratha soldiers were firing without pointing. The British realised the entire Indian military was about to revolt. They knew they had to quit."
