An incandescent gas mantle is a device that produces bright white light when heated by a flame. The mantle is a fabric bag that is coated with metallic salts, such as thorium and cerium. When the mantle is first lit, the fabric burns away and leaves a ceramic shell of metal oxides. The flame heats the metal oxides, which emit light in the visible spectrum. The metal oxides have a high emissivity in the visible spectrum, meaning they radiate a lot of light, but a low emissivity in the infrared spectrum, meaning they do not waste much heat. This makes the mantle more efficient than a simple flame, which emits mostly infrared radiation. The type of fuel used to heat the mantle depends on the type of lantern or lamp. It can be liquid, such as kerosene or white gas, or gas, such as propane or natural gas. The fuel is burned inside the mantle, which helps to keep the flame small and stable. The mantle also enhances the combustion process by providing oxygen to the flame. Gas mantles were widely used in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to illuminate the streets and homes of Europe and North America. They were also used in portable camping lanterns and some oil lamps. Today, gas mantles are still used in some places where electricity is not available or reliable, such as rural areas and developing countries.

That explains nothing. I recommend this guy's video. He seems to know more about lights than I know about everything combined.

My Dad had one of these lanterns when I was a kid and would use it when we’d camp in the mountains. It was brighter and lasted longer than any battery operated one I’ve used since.
