Interesting, but never built. The mechanism shown is from a conceptual drawing by the Greek engineer Heron, working in Egypt under Roman rule. Archaeological evidence shows no traces of this complex pneumatic system ever being built. The concept, however, was ahead of its time.

me when i start a fire and wait an hour for the heat to boil water and fill a bucket instead of simply using my hands to open a door

Did this actually exist or is it just someone's fantasy? Where's a real example of it?

I hope no one is stupid enough to think any civilization is going to build this complicated bullshit just to wait for a log burning over 30 minutes to open a door. A door that opens against the weight of small bucket of water.

Interesting but incomplete at best - what closes the doors? Less weight in the bucket won't do it alone, must have another counter wt or something

Heat travels up... not through a pole underground to heat ware in a ball.

That's pretty genius. Considering we still utilize hydropneumatic doors, this has to be along the world's oldest technologies.

I have news for you, that is an Ancient Greek invention that was used by Romans. Romans mostly apprehended Ancient Greek inventions.

Romans basically invented ‘smart doors’ without electricity 😮‍💨

The physics seem dubious. Even if the heat from the fire travelled all the way into the tank, which already seems iffy, why doesn't the expanding air simply escape towards the path of least resistance, i.e. towards the fire, rather than starting to push the water out of the tank?

Automatic doors without sensors… Romans were different fr 😮‍💨

I never knew the fire heat can travel downward 🤔

It must have been such a pain in the ass to wake up in the middle of the night in Ancient Rome and go through all this just to open your bathroom door.

So this would be chemical energy -> kinetic transfer? Cause the burning fuel is actually doing the work

Public school has failed every single one of you. Assuming this all works and would open the door, the water is now in the bucket. There is no emptying of the bucket or refilling of the initial container built in to this.
