There was another ball under the thatch in close proximity to where his ball landed. Probably lost some time ago. When he struck his ball, he dislodged enough turf to also unwittingly free the hidden ball and send them both into the air.

Saw something just like this last summer. I was standing on the green watching my playing partner play from some tall grass at the edge of the tree line near the green. He makes his stroke and two balls come out. Definitely a surprise.

And I can’t even hit 1 ball correctly out of the deep stuff.

I’m glad the did not, but would not have surprised me if they dinged him with a “wrong ball” penalty. That is how strange the rules can be at times.
