African Americans are descendants of not just the transatlantic slave trade but also descendants of the intracontinental slave trade a.k.a "The Second Middle Passsage" because the U.S. banned the importation of enslaved Africans to the U.S. from Africa in 1808. This is what triggered the U.S. to get enslaved Africans from the Caribbean and birthed the "born into slavery" rule. Making African Americans a mixture of the youngest and the oldest Africans brought to the Americas. The oldest are considered to be Brazilian and Hispanic/Latino African diaspora. The youngest can be considered African groups of Jamaica and Haiti because the importation of enslaved Africans from Africa to those places didn't cease until the mid-19th century. The scale of Indian immigration is rarely understood, many still think Italian migration to Australia is the largest or most defining. They are completely wrong. There are more people who were born in India living in Australia than there those with even trace Italian ancestry, and most of those Indians have arrived in the last decade! While Italians were the first break from British monoculture which has defined Australia since its inception, the peak wave of Italians was just 2.3% of the population. This was a wave to alleviate the existential threat that Australia’s small population at the time posed and so the importation of a culturally adjacent European group was proposed. Whereas now, even years old census data, Indian born is 3.6% of the population and has doubled in the last 10 years. This wave is of a far more distant population culturally and ethically, brought in for just economic reasons. So even after adjusting for population growth, the Indian born community today is roughly 1.5x more dense than the Italian at its absolute height and with little to no nation building excuse. When you account for Indian ancestry and the broader migration of the subcontinent you’re looking at closer to 6%+. We were never asked.

Carney: Our country was built on the bedrock of three peoples: Indigenous, French, and British. Long before the battle on these plains, long before the first French ship sailed up the St. Lawrence, Indigenous peoples were the original stewards of this land. They built nations, trading networks, and systems of governance that spanned the entire continent. The Haudenosaunee, the Anishinaabe, the Wendat, and the Innu shaped this land and were shaped by it. Then the French came. They built a new society adapted to the realities of North America, shaped by the river and forest, by trade with Indigenous nations, and by the determination to survive and flourish in this land. When the British came, that civilization did not disappear. It endured and now it thrives.

White people are still blamed for slavery, when it was practiced everywhere in the world, and was only ever abolished thanks to the idealism of White people. In some parts of the non-White world, slavery still exists. In 🇲🇷 Mauritania, an entirely Muslim country in African, over one fifth of the entire population are slaves. This slavery is mostly hereditary and along racial lines -- the mostly Black slaves are born to a life of servitude to the Arab-Berber upper caste. In general, all Blacks in Mauritania are referred to as ‘Abd', meaning slave. Historically, the Arab slave trade was particularly brutal. Anywhere between 10 and 18 million Africans were enslaved by Arab slave trade. 3/4 captured slaves died before they reached the market for sale. Most male slaves were castrated, a procedure that killed over half of the men and boys it was practiced on, due to overbleeding.

THE MYTH THAT AFRICANS ‘SOLD THEIR PEOPLE’ Europeans have attempted to distance themselves from - and avoid accountability for - their atrocities during the centuries-long slave trade by propelling narratives that it was Africans who sold them slaves. On this version, Africans share the blame for the horrors faced by Black people. During his opening remarks on African identity and the decolonisation of education in Africa and the Caribbean at the University of West Indies in Jamaica, at the PJ Patterson Institute for Africa Caribbean Advocacy, vice chancellor Hilary Beckles spoke about the importance of reclaiming our narratives. As Beckles puts it, when history is told from the gunman's perspective, you inevitably get a distorted picture. Beckles dispels the myth that Africans willingly sold their fellow Africans into slavery. While he notes that there were certainly corrupt individuals back then, just as there are now, they were a minority. In Nazi Germany, for example, there were Jewish people who collaborated with the regime, yet no one blames them for the Holocaust. So why is this the line of argument used when it comes to slavery? Most Africans who took part in the slave trade did so for survival and did not have much of a choice. When European narratives paint our ancestors as 'business partners,' it is misleading - a business partner is free to not partake in a business venture without consequences, whereas Africans were not. Moreover, Europeans exacerbated divisions amongst our people, spurring ethnic conflict and wars amongst Africans. It was often ‘prisoners of war’ who were bought by Europeans from Africans. The European narrative has been used to further divide Black people across the world, thus continuing the divide-and-conquer tactics that have ensured African disunity and exploitation for centuries.
