THE BOOK THAT GOT NKRUMAH DEPOSED? Today marks 59 years since pan-African icon and Ghana's founding leader Kwame Nkrumah was removed from office in a military coup engineered by the CIA. After leading Ghana to independence from British colonial rule in 1957, Nkrumah embarked on a mission to unite the African people on the continent and in the diaspora. It was his firm belief that Africans share not only a common history, but a common destiny. He was one of the founding leaders of the African Union's predecessor, the Organization of African Unity, in 1963. In a key speech at the opening summit, he eloquently made the case for African unity. He explained that true independence and prosperity could only be attained if African nations united on both the economic and political front. He said this was the only way they could defeat the menace posed by the neo-colonial system, which was hell-bent on maintaining its control over the continent, even as most countries attained 'flag independence.' To the CIA, revolutionary pan-African leaders like Nkrumah were a danger that needed to be 'neutralised.' Their words were seen as threats by the US establishment. It is perhaps telling that it was only after Nkrumah's overthrow that the IMF engaged in debt restructuring with Ghana. In this clip, Nkrumah's editorial assistant, June Milne, relates how his book - Neo-Colonialism, The Last Stage of Imperialism - was the last straw for the US. In it, he detailed how Western countries were looting Africa's resources. Milne claims the book spurred Washington into sponsoring the coup that removed him. At my second rally in Mpigi, I told the people that on my way there I met some of my bazzukulu who raised concerns about medicine shortages in hospitals and PDM money not reaching them. Corruption is not new; even during colonial times some abaami abused authority. That is why we deliberately returned power to the people through elected leaders from LC1 up to Parliament. Government mobilises and allocates resources, but protecting them is the responsibility of all of us through accountable leadership. I reminded the people that in the NRC days, local leaders were elected and directly answerable. We may need to revisit the right of recall so wananchi can hold leaders accountable. Let us work together, using credible evidence, to defeat corruption.

Who Is REALLY Keeping Africa’s Sit-Tight 'Leaders' In Power? Paul Biya, Omar Bongo, Félix Houphouët-Boigny, Mobutu Sese Seko, Teodoro Obiang, Gnassingbé Eyadéma, Yoweri Museveni, José Eduardo dos Santos, Denis Sassou, Nguesso, Idris Déby, Mobutu Sese Seko… These are Africa’s sit-tight leaders, who have ruled or continue to rule the continent with an iron fist, on behalf of a colonial menace that never really went away. The West, particularly the US, the UK and France, has historically backed these sit-tight African leaders under the pretence of “upholding democracy”, while demonizing, attacking and often murdering African leaders who refuse to bow to its interests. This pattern continues today with the West’s continued endorsement of the “democracies” in Cameroon, Uganda and Kenya, as it condemns the “juntas” in Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso. So the next time you hear the words “democracy” and “Africa” in the same sentence from the lips of the West, ask yourself… who truly benefits from Africa’s current “democracies”?

In 1966, those Ibo majors who planned the Ibo coup were very foolish and reckless. The reason is that the Ibos dominated every sector in Nigeria. There was no reason to take up arms against your own government. The events of 1966 are the cause of the suffering the Ibos experience today, said the Ohaneze secretary. By 1965, the Ibos had infused themselves into every sector in Nigeria since their fellow Ibo man was in power. Even in Lagos, “Yorubaland,” the Ibos took over many sectors, sidelining the Yorubas, extending all the way to Ibadan and other regions of Nigeria. But the greed of the Ibo people always overpowered their sense of reason. Nnamdi Azikwe was greedy and wanted to be in charge of Yorubaland before Awolowo fought back. Azikwe, an Ibo man, was in power, but greed did not let the Ibos rest, they wanted more. They desired all the power of other regions to be centralized in one person who controlled it. They planned a coup, killed Yoruba leaders, Hausa-Fulani leaders, and spared their own Ibo leaders. After that, they put an Ibo man in charge of the country as head of state. The Ibos then dissolved the regional system of government, which allowed each region to govern itself. The Ibos cancelled it and brought all power to the center and who was at the center? An Ibo man. The North quickly realized what was going on and countered with a coup. they took power from the Ibos and kept the system Ibos planned the coup to change “ power in central “. The Ibos did not like this, so they asked to leave Nigeria since their plan had failed. The North said, “Oh, now you want to leave after killing our leaders?” The Biafra war then broke out, and the Ibos lost again. That system of Governemnt the Ibos planned the coup for is what Nigeria still uses today. The same Ibos are the ones complaining to this day! They brought the problems Nigeria faces today and still they cry every day about being victims. Have they learned from their mistakes of the 60s? No. Just look at their recent behaviors.

What’s holding Africans back? President Kagame asked. Prof. Murigande told Kagame that the main reason is that African leaders don’t care about their people. They seek to enrich themselves — to eat, and to eat alone. The president agreed with him, but he pressed further, asking why this problem seems peculiar to Africa. Kagame doesn’t ask rhetorical questions. He has identified a problem and is involving Rwandans in finding a solution. Here’s my take: To overcome challenges like those faced by postcolonial societies, a people must rediscover a sense of collective self-worth. Usually, this comes from the memory of their past achievements— who they were as a people informs who they are and who they aspire to be. While Africa was not the only region to experience colonization, it is one of the few where colonialism either erased the memory of past greatness or created new countries with no shared memory of such greatness. Colonisation captured African minds. In that sense, although Africa was colonised last, it was colonised the worst. Colonial education deepened this alienation, distorting African aspirations, turning them from collective to individual. In the 1950s, the small group of “educated” African elites aspired to join the white world : the colonial administration. Today, with colonial education still intact and keeping African minds in chains, the elites it creates do not aspire to uplift their people; they aspire to join the global elite. They don’t seek to improve their own societies; they seek to escape from them. Accordingly, these elites measure their self-worth by: •how fluently they speak foreign languages, •which foreign schools they send their children to, •which foreign hospitals they can afford, •how many houses they build, and how much money they invest abroad. At the heart of this lies a quiet acceptance that Africans are somehow defective as a people, and that the only way to succeed is individually. Even those who once believed they could change things often abandon the quest for collective improvement once they grasp the scale of the effort it demands. The kind of heavy lifting required for real transformation breeds a sense of hopelessness, one that pushes people from collective ambition toward individual greed. So, the individual’s aspiration becomes to join the global bourgeoisie. But these are strategies of self-evacuation. They are attempts to flee backwardness by moving from the rural village to the capital, then on to the enlightened colonial metropolis, and ultimately to disappear into cosmopolitan anonymity - a form of self erasure rather than a search for self restoration. This journey became the measure of progress. Those who remain in Africa do so with one foot already out (through dual citizenship or close connections to the representatives of their desired metropoles) for themselves, and especially for their children. Although Kagame brings up this topic, it has been a theme he turns to whenever he notices that some ethic is creeping in amongst the leaders, only that this time he is more specific. For example, while he has been teaching agaciro as a form of mental decolonization, most people over the years understood agaciro merely as a material pursuit. Yet agaciro is, at its core, about retracing and reclaiming the memory of self-worth and therefore the basis for collective pursuit.

🔸Yesterday, Mozambique commemorated 50 years of independence. Over 30 heads of states were invited to be part of a ceremony marking what, in normal instances, would be a precious milestone. If all things were equal, the day marking the nation’s half century of independence from colonial rule ought to have been a colourful moment of national pride and mass celebration. Instead, the broken promise of liberation made the day more dull than dirty dishwater. The stadium was eerily empty, possibly emptier than the stadium at Robert Mugabe’s funeral which most Zimbabweans boycotted in protest against the poverty, injustice and corruption that characterized his rule and has compounded since. As a keen observer of politics on the continent, I cannot help but wonder - did the Govt or leaders of Mozambique stop to ask why the people were absent? Did the fellow heads of state visiting from other countries not find it strange that the masses who “voted overwhelmingly” chose not to participate in the “celebration”? Are the people at the top so deaf to the voices of the people at the bottom that they do not care? Can you blame young people for concluding that these liberation movements were really oppressors-in-waiting, fighting to be included in the system but not to change it? Crucially, how did a Govt that “won” 70% of the vote, controls state machinery and claims to have mass national support fail to fill even 10 percent of a 40,000-seater stadium? You can rig elections but you cannot rig popular support or the people’s consent to be governed. Whether one is in Kenya, Mozambique, Zimbabwe or any other country where governance is broken, the cry of the masses is the same. We need new leaders.🇿🇼🇲🇿🇰🇪

TOORO, BE WARY OF FLATTERERS/ADULATORS: Tooro needs to tone down on ANGER, reject the DIVISIONS, UNITE around what they have got, and avoid exploiting the vulnerabilities of either side. But if they recklessly overplay their hand, whichever side one may be, "NI GATIKIRA KIMU- TO A POINT OF NO RETURN-THE ANKOLE WAY! You must understand that the African Post-independence traditional Cultural institutions(Kingdoms) are very fragile. That while they enjoy emotional resonance and cultural authority among those who cherish them, they have gone through alot of NEO-COLONIAL RE-ENGINEERING...., making them almost just CONVINIENT FICTIONS for the Colonial state. THEIR FORMAL LEGAL EXISTENCE; THEIR SECURITY; THEIR FINANCIAL AND RESOURCE VIABILITY, stem from the AUTHORITY of the STATE, and they exist at the PLEASURE and CONVENIENCE of the STATE. Many may not wish to hear this, but must know, in political and legal construct, they are largely USEFUL FICTIONS for the Post-independence NEO-COLONIAL STATE and the COLONIAL ELITES who leverage them! Recently, at the burial of Prince Christopher Kabirisi, the great grandson of OMUGABE MUTAMBUKA of Nkore, I narrated the problems the DIVISIONS in Ankole had on the cultural institution of Ankole, and the current CULTURAL DECLINE IN ANKOLE CULTURAL LANDSCAPE; LANGUAGE, TRADITIONS, etc..👇(this is part2). The term “British” derives from the term “Britons” who we know today as the Anglo-Saxon English people. When the Anglo-Saxon English decided to embark on their colonial project. They had to create a distinction between the People and the Colonial Project. The people remained the English … whilst the project to “rule the waves” and conquer 1/4 of the globe spreading their customs, traditions, culture and way of life became Britannia, British, Britain. Some people do not want to hear this but for the last FIVE centuries. The term “British” has not referred to a people but a project, a state, nationality, a way of life & a culture. In this world, Africans face inhumane treatment not only from those who don’t look like them, but also from those who look, talk, and share the same DNA with them. It is hard being a Black African living in a racist world which also has people who look like you working against your group interests. I thought of Donald Trump’s racist asylum visa programme favouring South Africa’s white Afrikaners as I drove past Khayelitsha on my way to Cape Town international airport to catch my flight back to London, and wondered who actually needs help, the privileged Afrikaners or the poor Black people living in informal settlements like Khayelitsha. These informal communities are a product of apartheid’s economic inequities and the incompetence of corrupt post-colonial leaders who have come to see this type of settlement as normal, thirty-one years after gaining political independence. People living here face high rates of untold crime, overcrowding, inequality, and general suffering. It is important to consider the historical and systemic factors that contributed to the economic and social conditions that communities like Khayelitsha face today, these factors are not exclusively from one source. The racist visa programme favouring Afrikaners highlights the need for a more nuanced and equitable approach when powerful countries deal with international matters, especially when considering the ongoing effects of apartheid and its lasting impact on South Africa’s Black population. The presence of informal settlements like Khayelitsha serves as a stark reminder of the enduring effects of colonialism, particularly apartheid, and the failure of post-colonial leaders to address the root causes of poverty and economic inequality, that is why I say today’s crisis is not exclusively from one source. It is important to recognise that addressing these issues requires a comprehensive and inclusive approach that prioritises the needs of those most impacted by systemic injustices, the Black people who were humiliated by apartheid and now by poverty powered by economic inequities. The irony of Trump’s racist approach towards South Africa is that it forbids the country from radically addressing the inequalities created by centuries of racist rule, while giving help to those who do not actually need it. It is a continuation of a racist order that has long subjected Black people to being second- or third-rate global citizens. The fact that Trump can lie about a white genocide happening in South Africa, with the help of his racist allies who own social media platforms, shows how very little has changed in global politics since the lynching days except for cosmetic changes. For a state like America to lie about a genocide happening in South Africa while totally ignoring the impact and existing realities authored by racist rule is truly wild and an uncomfortable reality that Black people must live with and not in denial. Unlike Trump, who is looking after people who look and think like him, the Black man’s burden is living in a racist world where your own people, presiding over the affairs of your own country, are also working against you. While Khayelitsha is rooted in hundreds of years of racist rule, it remains a present-day reality because of failed post-colonial Black governments that do not grasp the urgent need to bestow dignity on the lives and realities of Black people. The failure to create employment and roll out adequate housing has made the situation even more unbearable. How does it feel for those in power, and those enjoying generations of wealth built through racist enterprises, to drive past Khayelitsha in their million Rand automobiles? The funny part about life is that Black Americans are actually persecuted in America with the tacit approval of the state, yet it is the same state accusing South Africa of something it has not done, all while the Black post-colonial government fails to redress the economic humiliation of the Black South African living in shameful places like Khayelitsha. Unlike the descendants of racist rule in South Africa, who are now beneficiaries of Trump’s racist asylum visas, those in Khayelitsha have nowhere to run to, only to endure their indignity in pain, as time passes by, creating a generational curse passed on from father to son and mother to daughter.
