🤯🍬 SHELLAC — the natural secret behind that perfect shine on many candies like jelly beans — starts with tiny lac bugs living on trees in India. These insects secrete a protective resin that people harvest from branches (after the bugs have left). The raw resin is then cleaned, melted, filtered, and cooled into beautiful transparent golden-brown flakes. These flakes are food-safe (FDA-approved as E904), biodegradable, and used as a glazing agent to give candies their glossy look and protective coating. Shellac production has been happening in India for over 3,000 years, with around 20,000 tons made each year — a natural alternative to synthetic coatings.

That's right, cochineal insects are used to produce red pigment.

Everybody's crazy in the comments about bug poop. No one's noticing that the bug shit they are eating has been stretched by someone with his bare feet

Although not named, the goo substance is shellac, from lac bugs. ℹ️Shellac facts: Source: lac bug secretions on Indian trees ✅Shellac is a natural resin secreted by the female Kerria lacca (lac) insect on tree branches, primarily in India and Southeast Asia. It’s scraped off the branches as raw resin (“sticklac”). Process: refined into transparent flakes used as natural glazing agent ✅Raw lac is processed (washed and purified) and dried into flakes or “buttons”; these are refined into shellac, which is dissolved in alcohol to make glazing solutions used in food (confectioner’s/glaze). History: dating back over 3,000 years in India ✅Broadly supported. Shellac and lac resin have been used for millennia in India for various purposes (dye, varnish, lacquer, cosmetics). Specific “3,000 years” references appear in historical/ethical discussions, consistent with long traditional use. FDA approval: used as E904 on candies (e.g., jelly beans) for shine/protection. ✅Purified shellac (often labeled as confectioner’s glaze or E904) is Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) by the FDA for use as a surface-coating/glazing agent in foods, providing shine and moisture protection. ✔️Shellac is a natural, bio-based resin; compared to many synthetic polymers it is more biodegradable/natural in origin. ✔️Shellac is derived from insects, so it is not vegan. Some vegetarian groups regard it as vegetarian but not vegan; allergen labeling may be considered due to origin or sensitivities; consumers are advised to be informed.

I’m surprised by the surprise in the comments. I’d thought this one was more widely known like gelatin being made of pork & beef bones, cartilage & connective tissue and beef tallow/fat being in snack cakes.

Okay but why do they seemingly still used the old hundreds of not thousand of year old process for refining it? I get that its works and it apparently not a health concern but things like the filtering and stretching seems like things even a steam powered machine would do much

It's called "Shellac", a byproduct of the Lac bug. Most of it came from India. Usually used to varnish wood furniture and make it glossy.
