Sometimes we need to know how many pieces there are, and other times we need to know how many whole ones there are. Although I don’t teach it, often a fifth grader will say, “Can’t we just..?” and derive the algorithm for mixed number to fraction on their own.

I love the visuals and modeling but want to share that Common core got rid of the distinction between fractions and improper fractions and they are all now just fractions and some have a value greater than 1.

Tip: Talk to students about quarters. You know, the 25¢ piece. Make them realize that they talk about "quarters" as independent things: you can count them one at a time. Then drop the bomb that a "quarter" is a quarter (… of a dollar). 1/x (for any x but zero) is countable!
