I thought it was pretty clear he's the horns headband Kris wore. If darkeners are things given life reflected from the people that interact and use them, it would make sense that he's like an ideal son to Torial from Kris' perspective because that's what he wanted to be, someone trying to please everyone and fit in, especially his adopted family. When he grew out of it, he discarded it and accepted that he wasn't a monster. It's why Ralsei's the butt of trash jokes, it's why the Ralsei tea does okay healing for Kris (which changes when Kris connects more to him in chapter 4), it's why when his and Kris' tea get used on themselves respectively they heal the same amount under the same conditions, it's why he starts out obscured and masked in shadows then reveal who he actually is, it's why he can go with Kris and Susie on adventures to other dark worlds because his anchor is Kris, it's why Ralsei cares so much about Kris specifically.
