⚽ Day 42 of building my football/soccer game solo in Unreal Engine 5. Tonight, I rebuilt how the ball and the player's feet actually talk to each other while remaining separate meshes. I wanted to get pretty technical with y'all on a Saturday, so enjoy the read if you enjoy this stuff. Otherwise, just watch the video 👍 - Normal dribbling is impulse-based now. The foot arrives, knocks the ball on, the ball is genuinely loose between touches. Stop running and the ball keeps going without you. - We enabled Motion Warping on all 10 turn animations so the montages will now bend the player's path mid-turn so the boot arrives at the ball, instead of the ball being dragged to wherever the animator drew it previously. - Every contact is authored on the animation itself. I track which frame, which foot, which part of the boot, and whether it CARRIES the ball (sole on a drag-back) or STRIKES it (inside-of-the-foot on a 90) - Each contact declares how close the player needs to be. A sole on top of the ball, an inside-foot redirect and an outside-foot push all reach differently — 75 / 63 / 53 units - Touches are credited only to the foot the animation is actually dribbling with - Sideways and forward correction are capped separately. Pushing the ball across your line keeps it. Pushing it forward is how you lose it - Touch strength scales with your speed. The ball has to leave the foot ~1.27× faster than you're running just to stay ahead. This was an annoying bug I kept running into where I overran the ball and left it behind. When I said Tenz having a 138ms reaction time wasnt impressive I was trolling. 138ms is indeed impressively fast for a human, as our average reaction time is roughly 273ms. Aim assist, however, does not succumb to human reaction time. Even the best M&K players in the world cant react as fast as 0ms. The player that killed HusKerrs yesterday, did exactly that(kind of). Before Huskerrs slid around the corner, the guy had already started tracking him because aim assist began tracking his hitbox at the edge of the corner. An M&K player would have to react to the enemy once they've ALREADY turned the corner, THEN adjust their aim & stay on target. As little as this may seem, its the massive difference between winning a fight, or dying in a high skill lobby. Making people rely on their reaction time rather than a computer doing it for them, would go a LONG way.

We can obviously question the "spirit" of how the rules are applied here, but since technology allows us to detect even the slightest micro-touch of the ball, we might as well use it. 🤯 HOWEVER, the main aspect of this decision to analyze is the subsequent header deflection by Veiga. Indeed, two questions arise here (in relation to the Laws of the Game): - Was it a "deliberate play" on his part or not ? If it is deliberate, he plays the Croatian player behind him onside. If it is not, offside should be called. - Was it a save ? (i.e., "preventing or attempting to prevent the ball from going into or very close to the goal"). If it is a save, then offside must be called. According to the Laws of the Game: "The following criteria should be used, as appropriate, as indicators that a player had control of the ball and, as a result, can be considered to have 'deliberately played' the ball: - The ball had travelled from distance and the player had a clear view of it; - The ball was not moving quickly; - The direction of the ball was not unexpected; - The player had time to coordinate their body movement, i.e. it was not a case of instinctive stretching or jumping, or a movement that achieved limited contact/control; - A ball on the ground is much easier to play than a ball in the air." Congratulations to our Ladies from Japan winning their World Cup Group with the maximum 9pts, 11 goals and 0 against! Remarkable considering how few girls/ladies play the game here in Japan. Our strategy has focused around individual Technical Skill Training from the youngest ages. Mastering the very basic skills which allows for more advanced skills to be acquired. Seems like it was a good plan when we created a Technical Skills Corner on National Television targeted towards very young girls using the currently National Team Captain at the time, Aya Miyama. This series ran for 1 full year introducing Ball Mastery exercises. #FIFAWomensWorldCup #jfa #weleague #nadeshiko #Japan #Tokyo #Football #Soccer

Giving Rodri the World Cup Golden Ball over Messi wasn’t deserved — One of the most baffling decisions I've ever witnessed at a World Cup. Rodri is the heartbeat of Spain’s system, no doubt about it. But you can’t hand him the tournament’s best player award based mainly on his performances in the semifinal and final. Many people debated the controversies surrounding Argentina throughout this World Cup, but FIFA's decision to give the Golden Ball to Rodri instead of Lionel Messi was beyond belief. Messi deserved every individual award this tournament had to offer. He delivered world-class performances in every match for Argentina. If the Golden Ball isn't awarded to the best player of the tournament, then what is its purpose? Players give everything on the pitch to earn that recognition. Rodri is an outstanding footballer, but based on this World Cup alone, there is no comparison between him and Messi. The statistics speak for themselves. The performances speak for themselves. That's why this is one of the most baffling decisions I've ever witnessed at a World Cup. There’s also a huge difference in the strength of the two national teams, yet that wasn’t properly taken into account. Neither was individual performance. This isn’t about statistics alone. Rodri is incredibly important and influential to his team. Messi is just as essential—arguably even more so. Not simply because of goals or assists, but because of everything he means to his team. Both are the heart of their sides, but Messi had the added edge of consistently deciding games. Since the award ultimately went to a player from the finalists, the comparison is straightforward. I honestly don’t know what they were thinking by giving it to Rodri. For me, Lionel Messi deserved the World Cup Golden Ball without a second thought.
