Rep. Eric Swalwell is calling for the return of a mother and her two children who were deported after a routine immigration check-in. One of the kids is a deaf 6-year-old, and Swalwell says his office flew to Colombia to give him his hearing device. "To the child we have returned his sound, but to our nation, what has happened to our soul?" he said. "How does ruining the life of a 6-year-old deaf child make our community or our country any safer? It doesn't, it makes the country darker."

Infants are the world’s most accomplished language learners. As the process unfolds, children pass through stages of progressively more complex “babbling” before they begin using conventional words. But babbling isn’t limited to spoken language. Deaf children and the children of deaf parents pass through similar stages as they approximate the use of sign language - which brings us to this video, shared to IG by oursignedworld. Watch how locked in this little guy is as he “speaks” with his deaf father, observing dad’s sign language and then “babbling” back with his arms and hands. In time he will become both an accomplished signer and speaker. What a lovely example of language acquisition in process.

We’ve been hearing stories for months of children losing their glasses during displacements, breaking them as they fled, or needing new prescriptions because their eyes are affected by the dust from bombs. The Sameer Project worked with a local optometrist in Al Mawasi, Khan Younis to set up a tent for eye exams and fit children of all ages with new distance and reading glasses. We provided 71 pairs of glasses ranging from 170-200 shekels per pair to the children who were in need. We hope to provide eye exams and glasses again in other areas and with your support we can ensure that children are able to see - to learn, to study, to play! Please contribute to either the South campaign or Ramadan campaign for these medical needs.
