When the child starts to have an emotional meltdown, you don’t LET them or encourage it by talking and negotiating with them. You shut that shit down immediately, firmly, and without emotion(anger). The child is now alone on time out until they return to their senses.

That's perfectly reasonable. If I say I'm getting a hamburger it's going to have lettuce, tomato, pickles, ketchup, mayonnaise, and possibly avocado. Being too literal is equal to being an asshole in certain situations.
