I have so many problems with this. 1. Soap is fine. That was only the case back when soap contained lye. 2. Scrub that thing with a chain mail scrubber (for stuck on burned food) and a regular scrubber with soap and hot water. It's fine. 3. Dry and heat to smoking hot. 4. Hit with a very thin layer HIGH TEMP oil...NOT olive oil! MCT, Lard, Tallow, flaxseed...EVOO is for eating, NOT seasoning. 5. Season the inside AND the outside of the pan. 6. Wipe the excess oil off with a clean towel. FOR EXTREMELY stubborn stuck burnt food heat the pan till ripping hot and throw a couple ice cubes in there and scrape with a metal spatula or a bench scraper. Then follow steps 1-6. OMG.

Soap is just fine. Even the manufacturers tell you to use it. It’s no longer an issue. Back in the day, when soap was made from lye, yes you absolutely needed to avoid it.

Paper towels? Olive oil? Final product with obvious spots that have debris cooked into the seasoning... This dude has no idea what he's doing...

Don't use olive oil, it has a low smoke point. Use lard or tallow if you have it.🫡

olive oil is the worst oil for cast iron.

You can put soap now. You weren’t supposed to back when there was lime in soap but they have removed that ingredient.

THIS is why I never have bought and will never buy a cast iron pan.

This is too much. I agree, never use soap, but a scalding with water in the sink and a wipe is appropriate for daily cleaning. I only season with oil a few times a year. NOTHING can live on cast iron. The excessive boiling and salt scrubbing removes the patina that you're adding back every time with more oil anyway. None of it is necessary.

I never use water or soap or salt. I had my pan 20 yrs. I made burgers on it 1 hr ago it was a greasy mess, I took a dry paper towel ripped it in 3 pieces, wiped it clean, to season make sure it has oil on it when you shut stove off, scrape out crust with spatula and wipe

I still use a little soap but I don’t season with olive oil because of the smoke point.

wash with soap. dry it on the stove top, rub down with coconut oil when completely dry. my skillet belonged to my great grandma and it still makes the best cornbread and biscuits.

It’s just not that hard. Hottish water to rinse it clean, chain mail scrubbie for stubborn stuff, towel dry, and light oil if needed. Cast iron is not something that takes a lot of work or should be babied. It will outlive you.

Definitely not like this fool did, I feel bad for that cast iron. It’s not properly seasoned, olive oil does not do the trick for seasoning or maintenance like he showed Ugg ffs 1. Season properly with mangalitsa lard 2. Cook with animal fats exclusively 3. Wipe out with damp paper towel while still warm 4. Use chainmail scrubber if you burn things to your iron

My mom’s been using dishsoap on her cast iron my whole life, because she learned it from her mom back in the 50’s, and she has the nicest cast iron pans I’ve ever used—3 of them are older than I am. The never-soap myth is perpetuated by the overly self-important types.

I use Dawn Ultra. Only detergent that animal rescue orgs use to clean sea life after oil spills. That stuff cuts through anything.

Heat it up on the burner, drop it under running HOT water, use a bench scraper to moving seriously stuck on stuff… throw back on the burner, evaporate all the water and apply a thin coat of oil… it’s worked fine for over 100 years… 🤷🏼‍♂️

You CAN do it this way but its a myth. Soap and water is just fine. Dry it good. Oil it good. People like this dork are just trying to act like they know some trade secret you don't. There is more than one way to skin a cat. This dweeb acts like the second soap is used its junk.

The makers of my cast iron, Butterpat, recommend dish soap and water. I've never had an issue. Just set the pan back on the burner when you're done washing to make sure it's dry.

Block this guy. Soap is a requirement. Soap, water, & scrubber brush or scotch brite pads. Let soak a few minutes if needed. Rinse & repeat. If you put oil on and leave it - its gonna get gunked up. This guy's instructions are disgusting.

Dawn soap and hot water. Rub lard on it. Throw in hot oven for 15 minutes

Wash with dish soap, promptly dry (I use the stove after a paper towel wipe down), and then I reseason with a little bacon up.

Yeah that ain’t it. Salt scrub is for when you need to start over on seasoning, and vegetable oil has a higher smoke point and will bond better with the pan.

Scrub it with metal mesh while it’s hot after you’re done using it. Put oil or a fat in it after and wipe it down till it’s shiny. Done

i feel like the dish soap is something someone just said once and everyone repeats it. i’ve had the same one for 10+ years and i wash it like a regular pan. no issues at all/
