It's fascinating to see how it all works behind the scenes! We fill up our cars so often, yet rarely stop to think about the technology behind something as simple as a fuel pump.

the auto shutoff is purely mechanical. a thin tube near the nozzle tip pulls air in while fuel flows. when the tank fills and fuel covers the tip, the suction pulls fuel instead, pressure drops in a small chamber, and a diaphragm trips the latch that clicks the handle off

its so funny how the pump lies to you about the price while the real magic is just a big tank under your feet. fuel maths is the only maths i actually respect.

What I want to know, if you bring your own pump, where you can insert the hose, so the pumping rollers do the pumping on the hose, will gasoline spill out, or not?

Handy corollary: when the nozzle clicks off, stop. Squeezing in extra fuel pushes liquid into the vapor-recovery line and can foul your charcoal canister, a common cause of a check-engine light after filling up.
