The spacecraft starts with Earth's velocity (speed + direction) at the launchpad according to Newton's 1st law. It doesn't magically lose that velocity when it blasts off any more than you stop moving relative to the ground when you jump inside a train. So the 17500 mph is RELATIVE to the Earth. It only has to lose that velocity to return to Earth. Similarly the Earth's motion that you state is RELATIVE to the Sun. Therefore we can consider the Sun as motionless and work only with velocities relative to the Sun. Go back to physics class and learn about relative velocities (actually according to special relativity all velocities are relative, there's no such thing as absolute velocity).

Leaving the atmosphere doesn't mean that you are "left behind". Inertia doesn't just go away suddeny at any specific distance from Earth. When you jump up inside an airplane, you are not thrown at the back of the plane at 500 mph. You have inertia.
