not exactly since KOF is 3v3 in a sense that you switch characters per round after each gets eliminated instead of being able to actively call upon your benched characters in battle the 4v4 KOF, at least to my knowledge, was just that but with an Assist button

Couldn't you just have a tag button that works as a modifier? Where if you hold down the tag button, each face button is a different assist? You could even do 5v5 that way without too much difficulty
