How fast pistons move inside an internal combustion engine.

Keep this in mind when you forget an oil change.

🚘 Audi has recreated the historic Auto Union Type 52, a car that was never completed before World War II. This unrealized sports car, powered by a V16 engine, featured a three-seat cabin with the driver seated in the middle and passengers on either side.

I know. I can’t believe they do 10k rpm. Then you hear of 20k rpm…crazy. I can’t believe the oil stays in there

What’s amazing is that every time a piston changes direction the engine comes to a complete stop. (for a micro second, but it does stop)

And yet, it's 70 percent loss of the energy

Such an inefficient design - rotating detonation is the answer but no one seems to have cracked it with considerable wear and reliability

That might be 6000RPM Now visualize a 2004 Formula1 Ferrari V10 engine at 18,000 /19,000 RPM. Short strokes.

一般的な4サイクルエンジンの場合、8,000回転(8,000 rpm)でピストンは1分間に8,000往復(1秒間に約133.3往復)します。 [1, 2]

This illustrates the need for adequate lubrication.

Its disturbing how there is not a smidge of oil anywhere in there. Call me Mr. Diddy Worldwide as I lube up for anything.

Some 2-stroke race engines cycle over 350 times per second 🤯

Mechanical porn, a piece of art 😆

It’s truly mind-boggling. Thousands of tiny explosions per minute that propel millions of cars down the road every minute of every day.

Approximately 48 feet per second for a 350 Chevy at 5,000 rpm. Not a super high velocity really.

That is genuinely mesmerizing to watch.

Pistons moving faster than the eye can follow.

At 4000 rpm they move up and down 66 times per second, that's how fast.

Nice little reminder that the piston's speed is the engine's heart without that rapid rhythm, even the best fuel can’t turn into power. 🚗💨

Motor içten yanmalı. Pistonlar iyi yağlanmalı. Motor yağı çok önemli. Yağsız kalıp aşınmamalı.

Pretty remarkable really...

thats insane

@2d7ba3001f664c9 Amazing all that holds together.

It sounds like a sewing machine. 👌

Very fast 😁

And somehow air, fuel, combustion and exhaust is making it through fast enough to spin tires.

The horse and buggy on the road. Very problematic.

Still slower than how fast the pulses go in Helion's pulsed fusion reactor. It's actually insane how quickly it slams two hot rings of plasma into each other with magnetic fields and how the fibreglass that controls the magnets actually has to be cut to milimetre precision length to ensure the magnets fire at the exact time to pull it together.

Hell no

@grok who invented this

Wow
