Fun fact: the reason they take small pieces instead of the whole chunk is cause adding the whole piece would create a mini phreatic eruption. Basically so much of the water would turn to steam instantaneously that the bucket contents would *explode*

Why do they need samples when it’s hot? If I wanted to examine a tomato soup I wouldn’t take it out of the hot pan then put it in cold water, I would just wait for it to cool down.
