I just conducted unannounced oversight of the Northwest Detention Center, which serves my district, and what I witnessed was devastating. One woman, who has called this country home for 20 years, was detained just days before her wedding to a U.S. citizen. Another man, a legal permanent resident for 31 years, a proud member of the Machinists Union, and a father of three U.S. citizen children, is also being held in detention. Trump is detaining our neighbors, coworkers, and loved ones without guaranteed due process and no accountability. That’s not American; that’s authoritarianism. I will not back down from this fight.

The bill already has 123 Democrat co-sponsors. “This bill brings dignity, justice, oversight, and accountability to the detention system by repealing mandatory detention, prohibiting the detention of families and children in family detention, phasing out the use of private detention facilities and jails, and requiring DHS to establish civil detention standards.” “The bill creates a presumption of release and imposes a higher burden of proof to detain primary caregivers and vulnerable populations.
