They left out a lot of what he did because they thought it would be too unbelievable.

His life is proof that sometimes, reality is more unbelievable than fiction.

It's not historically accurate. The real Desmond Doss did way crazier shit. They had to tone it down to make a movie people wouldn't think was fiction.

Imagine being so extraordinary that Hollywood has to tone down your real-life story just to make it believable. 😂

What I have found to be inaccurate is the size of the area that this took place in. I have been to Okinawa and have visited Hacksaw Ridge. The top of the ridge is less than a football field in length but the movie makes it appear much larger. But I am not downplaying his heroism.

That's a great point. Hollywood often expands locations to make scenes more dramatic, but that doesn't take anything away from what Desmond Doss accomplished.

That bastard saved way more and even the enemy soldiers! If I recall correctly it was over 700 in one day?

But the documented estimate for the Hacksaw Ridge battle is around 75 men rescued, and even that number has been debated.

Read the guy's Wiki page... The movie actually UNDER-exaggerates just how amazing he was over the course of his life

They actually had to tone down the amount of historic stuff this guy did because if they didn’t, no one would believe it he saved more than 5000 men both American and Japanese he was by himself getting trucks of people down that were injured that the American thought it was a legion.

My son watched this with his wife 2 days after signing his enlistment to become a Combat Medic. That was 21/2 years ago. He is on his way home this week from his 1st deployment in the middle east. Proud Army Mom

That must be such a proud and emotional moment for you. ❤️

I feel pride and relief that he is coming home and that he is now safe. Said a prayer every day for those 2 things as I raised my American flag every morning.

Surprisingly, it's actually missing quite a few of his feats. The dude saved so many people that the filmmakers had to cut some stuff out just because people wouldn't believe the movie otherwise.

Why didn't the Japs lob hand grenades over the edge of the cliff from a safe distance from the edge? Great film.👍

Now… wasn’t Doss opposed to even “Touching” a rifle? Glaring plot hole blunder there… Great movie though.

sKY12 days ago

He refused to carry or use a weapon because of his religious beliefs, but that doesn't mean he was forbidden from touching one under every circumstance.

Yea, no I wasn’t harping on that shite I was just pointing out the scene in basic where he purposely refused to touch the rifle, then this scene. Doss was a fucking boss, no claim otherwise from me Just thought it ironic in the context of the movie, I mean they shot the scenes

I just couldn't figure out why the japs didn't cut the ropes.

They seriously downplayed how many lives he saved to keep the movie "believeable"

What's even more amazing is the Division he was in, because he was part of something really crazy the Army was doing at the time:

real doss was a maniac in all the good ways

Inaccurate. Because the attacks on hacksaw ridge during the war was WAY worse than the movie portrayed it to be. And the movie had guys using the torso’s of the deceased as shields against gunfire, and surviving soldiers soth missing limbs.

Without exaggeration... almost everything. Matter of fact, Mel Gibson wound up leaving a BUNCH of real things that happened out of the movie because no one was gonna believe it, they'd think they we're making it up

Were the japanese soldiers retarded or is this hollywood magic. They had an elevated position with good cover. Those 4 or 5 should have been able to wipe out that entire platoon

There is a Japanese sniper whose gun literally jammed every time he tried to take out Dos. Then immediately his gun were just fine whenever he targeted someone else. True story look it up.

Actually, there’s another nice touch in the realism of the movie The grease gun he was using to shoot with fires at a much higher rate when you’re using blanks Think back on the movie “The Dirty Dozen” Someone cared enough to slow down the rate of fire to match live ammunition
