Col. Mark Cancian says America isn’t about to run out of missiles in Iran, but it’s burning through the missiles it may desperately need against China. And that distinction matters. He says some of its most important stockpiles have already taken a serious hit. Roughly half of certain critical air-defence inventories have reportedly been used, and around a third of key long-range strike weapons are gone. Some newer precision missiles were consumed at even higher rates during the opening phase of the conflict. And these weapons can't simply be replaced next month; they take years to manufacture. That’s why the Pentagon is worried; the military understands that every additional week in Iran increases the risk somewhere else. Col. Cancian says the Iran campaign is already creating painful trade-offs between defending U.S bases, rearming Ukraine, replenishing Gulf allies, and preserving enough firepower for the Western Pacific. But he sees little evidence that this is seriously affecting Trump’s decisions. What makes this even more dangerous is that Iran’s strategy appears to have changed. Col. Cancian says Tehran is no longer merely firing missiles to demonstrate that it can retaliate. Satellite imagery suggests it has been targeting places where U.S service members gather. Earlier Iranian retaliation appeared deliberately designed to avoid casualties, and he believes the opposite is true now. His interpretation is that Iran wants to kill American troops, not necessarily to trigger a wider war, but to create enough political pressure inside the U.S to force Trump to end it. And those strikes are becoming remarkably precise. Col. Cancian believes Tehran is likely receiving live or near-live surveillance support from China or Russia to locate targets whose positions have recently changed.
