Every M-16 and every M-4 is an AR-15, but not every AR-15 is an M-16 or M-4. AR-15 is the name of the gun. The first AR-15s out of the factory were select fire military guns. The first guns bought by the military for testing in Vietnam were AR-15s. M-16 is a mil designation.
