Stringers are a problem. I like to pre-drill my holes for screws. The black stringer looks like a composite with a veneer. With the white on the edges it sort of looks like formica.

Yes, stringers are a problem When you threaten their grain direction like, ya know, all wood But, that is not the direction of force on then That’s why they have worked for hundreds of years That stringer he was breaking was also old dry wood which is not what is used when building stairs

@IndianaGPA I just don’t love any video that goes here a problem and then suggests a new wonderful solution when the problem is really overblown. If there is an actual problem with traditional stringers, it’s that the lumber to build them has become stupidly expensive.

That's why you use yellow pine for stringers.

I imagine that is composite, which is probably way more expensive than yellow pine. I have built hundreds of stairs with yellow pine and never had any issues except them being heavy as fck

Is it the coating that changes the way the wood reacts?

It’s something to do with the materials. It’s either the finish or the entire makeup. It could also possibly be different wood species.

New wood VS old wood. They cut trees down way to early now. Just look at the rings. Vikings used to harvest in the winter so zero moisture or sap was at the lowest point. Then they let them sit in water and age. We need to stop cutting corners. That's why jobs keep disappearing and skills die off with generations.

well the quality in wood makes a big difference, and steel brackets is better than using this type of cut for forming staircases

This is reinforced with Advantex Fiberglas composite structural material made by Owen Corning. I have built several deck using this material for the joists and for the stair stringers. It’s extremely consistent in size and nice to work with. It comes in different colors also

So if the customer isn’t going to pay extra for the composite you will lose money on a stair. I’ve never seen a stair fail, using the same pine stringers for 100s of years. It’s not exposed to the elements, and unless your partner weighs 900lbs the pine stringers will be fine.
