how it started / how it's going

it's my first time trying to wrangle Xcode in about a decade, and i'm having a lot of fun with it! please excuse the visual design i haven't gotten around to asking AI how to make it pretty yet

wow i did not expect this level of response 🫶 i built it to be useful for me, a person going to China next week, so i didn't expect the use case to resonate with so many others too! there's a few more features i want to add first, but stay tuned for TestFlight invites 👀

Have you come across Paul Nation’s survival vocabulary? He did a frequency analysis of the most common of phrases used by travelers and translated them into several major languages, available for free on his website

Very cool, I have so many questions! Are you using Claude, Cursor...? Would you say they are good at generating SwiftUI? What about the database, something local to the phone?

I started using mostly ChatGPT actually! Using Cursor a bit too, but since I'm copy/pasting into Xcode regardless, it's usually down to whatever gives me an easier answer lol Storage is Core Data, but I also have a JSON file that's pre-populating the app on first init

! this is awesome

weekend 2 update: added support for multiple languages! will add more languages with time, but i'd love to share a few Testflight invites with folks who want to test it in Chinese

This is so inspiring! ⚡️ And it solves such a great, specific problem when traveling or living somewhere new. *following for updates as I'm in the boat of turning my UI designs from Figma into Xcode too*

This is cool but just so you know Google translate has this feature.

i didn't actually know this was a feature! but i just tried it, and it's like 12 taps to do the same thing. so i'm still happy with a solution that lowers the friction and makes it easier to manage your phrases :)
