As many as they can afford.

5 is about right for normal folks...pistol for close range, AR for mid-range, scoped rifle for long range, shotgun for "fuck everbody in front of me", and a .22 for plinking.

proper evolution of gun ownership pistol, shotgun, rifle, 2nd rifle, 2nd shotgun. then you start buying guns for different scenarios. like a kitchen table gun, bathroom gun... back porch gun... a pistol gets you to your rifle, and a shotgun is for the "oh shit!" moments. plan accordingly.

I’ve compared guns to saws to a lot of my non-gun owning acquaintances. I have a circular saw, a jigsaw, a miter saw, a chainsaw, a table saw, coping saw, a wet saw, keyhole saw, etc.. they each have a specific purpose and fill a specific need. You can’t cut tile with a chainsaw and can’t cut a tree into rounds with a wet saw. Likewise, guns have specific niches to fill.

If you are a average person born and raised in the Great state of Texas You will have roughly about 9 firearms 2-3 hunting rifles 2-3 shotguns 3-4 pistols 1-2 ARs …if you are Older times that 2-3 fact!

A "normal" man is in the center of a distribution. He has a certain number of guns, based on the number owned by people to the left and to the right of him on that distribution. "Should" doesn't factor into it.

Shotgun for trap shooting or home defense. 2 pistols, one for carry, one for home defense. 2 rifles, one for hunting/sport, one for home defense. A novelty gun for fun and or home defense. Why is every one for home defense? Because whichever is closer or I feel like using.
