My town! Mount Elizabeth in Jensen Beach is a prehistoric shell mound built some 4,000–4,500 years ago by Late Archaic peoples later associated with the Ais, once rising about 60 feet and still among the tallest such sites in South Florida. Explorer William Henry Racey bought the land in the 1850s and named the height after his mother and mother-in-law; his son Charles built a three-story wooden house there in 1891 and planted pineapples and citrus until fire destroyed the home in 1921. In 1936 Coca-Cola heiress Anne Bates Leach and her husband Willaford purchased the property and completed the Mediterranean Revival mansion they called Tuckahoe—said to mean “welcome”—in 1938–39. The estate became a social center for Martin County, hosting parties that included soldiers from nearby Camp Murphy. After the Leaches left in 1950 it served as a Sisters of St. Joseph novitiate and Florida’s only two-year liberal-arts college, then as a Florida Institute of Technology campus, before Martin County acquired it in 1997 for Indian Riverside Park. The restored mansion and the mound itself are both listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
