China’s message on Taiwan was not routine diplomatic language. Xi did not simply “raise the Taiwan question.” He framed it as the most important issue in China-U.S. relations, warned of collision, conflict, and dangerous consequences, and made clear that “Taiwan independence” and peace across the Strait cannot coexist. That is the part many people are missing. In 2017, China was still telling Washington not to let Taiwan “disturb” bilateral ties. In 2026, China is telling Washington: mishandle Taiwan, and the entire China-U.S. relationship enters danger. Same Trump. Different China. America and the West are still thinking in 2017 terms — trade pressure, symbolic gestures, alliance theater, “strategic ambiguity.” But China is no longer the China Trump met nine years ago. The red line has not moved. The power behind it has.
