The Himalayas formed about 40-50 million years ago when the Indian Plate collided with the Eurasian Plate. This collision caused the land to buckle and rise, creating the mountain range. The process continues today, making the Himalayas grow even higher.

I've just recently learned that the land mass that is present day India slid so fast into its current location, and that speed might have contributed to the exceptional height of Mt Everest, and the Himalayas.
