🚨🏅 Around 80,000 Allied troops were saved during the evacuation of the Gallipoli Campaign in December 1915, an operation that risked heavy casualties if Ottoman forces discovered the trenches were being abandoned. Because enemy positions were extremely close, maintaining the illusion that troops were still present was critical to a safe withdrawal. To achieve this, Lance Corporal William Charles Scurry of the 7th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force, with assistance from Private A. H. Lawrence, invented the Drip Rifle. The device was designed specifically as a deception tool, allowing gunfire to continue after soldiers had left, preventing the enemy from detecting the evacuation. The continued firing successfully masked the withdrawal, enabling the evacuation to be completed with only a handful of casualties instead of the heavy losses commanders had feared. For his ingenuity and vital contribution, Scurry was mentioned in dispatches, awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, and promoted.🫡

Incredible animation! Fun fact: The drip rifle was invented by Australian Lance Corporal William Scurry (with help from Pte 'Bunty' Lawrence). It helped evacuate 80,000 troops with almost no losses One of the most successful deceptions in military history. Genius low-tech ingenuity!

𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰? 🕵️‍♂️☂️ The so-called “drip rifle” is often confused with a real Cold War weapon—the umbrella gun used in the assassination of Georgi Markov in 1978. A tiny ricin-filled pellet was fired from a modified umbrella, delivering poison with no sound and almost no trace—one of the most infamous covert weapons ever revealed, linked to KGB. Real spy tech… stranger than movies. 👀

Australia's biggest contribution to ww2 was designing a clever way to abandon thier arms to conver a retreat. How do ANZAC forces not catch more shade?

This is a conceptual deterrent, not a field-reliable tactic. Variants were discussed historically, but practical use was extremely limited.
