Culture is different...it's safe for an 8 year old to go to the shops himself in China. In the UK it isn't.

When I used to live in Poland, I was independent by 8, the country is very safe

Chinese people are very polite, you can just show them a picture of the product and they will guide you to the section and help you shop.
