Penn State head football coach Matt Campbell believes in mastering the basics, not becoming a jack of all trades. " You've been there. Your team's not good enough yet. So you try to out scheme everybody. And really what happens is you become the jack of all trades, master of nothing. And we're always trying to catch up 'cause we're just not good enough. So we're gonna out scheme you. Which honestly, it sets your program back. And so what we did is really simple. We're gonna be really good at quarters. We're gonna play four down. We're gonna play base defense. We're gonna play quarters. We're gonna learn how to tackle. We're gonna learn how to run into the football. First drill we do every single day on defense is pursuit drill. Now we're 10th in the country in total team defense. You know what we do really well? We run with the football. You know what we did on offense? We took two run plays. We took three pass plays. But we got really good at it. We became great teachers again instead of trying to be the jack of all trades We got back to what allowed our kids to learn and grow and develop to be the best they can be."

Cutthroat 5v5, 4v4 This is a really fast and chaotic game that we got from Team USA. Our team loves it because you have to talk the entire time even when your team is off the floor. Start with 3 or 4 teams: ●One team starts on offense. ●One team starts on defense. ●One or two teams are waiting on the baseline. - Play one possession. -If the offense scores: They stay on offense and earn 1 point. The defense sprints off, and the next team comes on defense. -If the defense gets a stop: They immediately transition to offense. The offense sprints off, and the next team comes on. -The game never stops, so players have to communicate, transition quickly, and be ready to play the second they step on the floor. It’s a great way to create game-like chaos, teach communication, and get players competing at a high pace. Rules: 1. When you score, you must thank the passer. 2. When you pass, you must cut 3. You can limit the amount of dribbles 4. You can say that you must have a paint touch first 5. 10 second shot clock 6. Jump balls always go to defense 7. Defense must talk the entire possession or they get off. 8. Defense has to call the score out when they come on the floor. 9. If the defense gets a live ball turnover above the NBA line they can go score it and get an automatic win.

This is a great example of using analytics to inform your principles of play. As you can see, the longer it is in the shot clock, the lower the field goal percentage. As a coach, you have to ask yourself, “How do I slow the other team down?” And one of the ways you can do this is by tagging up on a shot attempt. Tagging up: offensive players will crash the glass by “tagging” the player closest to them. This allows the offense, which is going to defense, to match up already. This slows down transition offenses by “choking” the ball and making it more difficult for players to throw outlet passes. Zone drops SUCK in Madden 27, here’s why: Stock zones allow for thirds, clouds, hooks, and purples to ‘chuck’ certain receivers if they come in their zone. This disrupts the timing of the route, and obviously messes up the opponents reads. It also makes them “look for work” more. Basically saying that stock zones play stickier, so you should avoid ever playing with zone drops on. Turning on ANY zone drop allows an invisible “Match” setting to be turned off. Back in the day we used to have a match setting; we don’t anymore, and turning on zone/off drops is the new determining factor on whether your zones match or not. Timing is EVERYTHING on Offense. You will never get a stop in this game if every route combo they’re used to calling has the same timing and read progression on every play.
