it's an old Chinese carpenter's skill with 2000 years history. Chinese engineer call it as "sunmao". 榫卯

A few of this still uses nails, just cause it’s wooden doesn’t mean anything

Curious how they could make such precision cut without machinery back then?

My mom used these kind of wood furniture like forty years ago, but now most just use nails instead of this traditional way, because of fast consuming. Produce fast and throw away fast. Traditional furniture is really good, last for life time and even several decades or more!

As an appraiser, have seen huge log homes constructed with wood pegs as the fasteners. Takes incredible skill and knowledge. 🛠️🏠

The amount of precision work needed with these techniques makes these joints just a matter of curiosity
