How to draw poses. Using action lines and more tips. A thread 🧵 1/10

Let’s start with a simple example. The line of action is a line that represents the pose (or energy from a pose) in a really simple shape (a line). It helps with the energy in the pose. See these examples. 2/10

When you don’t use a line of action or just make it very straight. You get lifeless characters. Ofcourse this could work in some cases perfectly (a robot or someone pretending to be a robot). When you look at people you mostly don’t see straight action lines. 3/10

The line of action also says a lot about the personality of the character. Go study some cartoons and see if you can find the action line and can tell what it says about the character. 4/10

You can learn a lot about drawing poses and the line of action by doing figure drawing. Go find a figure drawing class or find a site or channel with lots of photos to study from. There are a lot of them. Drop in the comments if you know some of them! 5/10

Although you want clear silhouettes, so the character is easy to read. With a balance between negative and positve space. You can have closed poses for the acting. 8/10

Look for reference when drawing poses. Like in this case I looked for running people how they keep their balance when running. There is no shame in using reference to understand things better. 9/10
